Abstract:
|
This thesis provides fundamental research in the field of survey methodology. It makes several contributions to the field of measuring the data quality of cross-national surveys and provides a broad empirical background for improving data quality in cross-national and national survey contexts. In particular, this study will help to further an understanding of the challenges related to the quality indicators of fieldwork in face-to-face surveys. Thus, this study provides background for researchers and practitioners interested in the process quality of surveys. The implicit assumptions prevailing in survey research related to the correlation of the often entangled quality indicators—response rates, fieldwork efforts, and nonresponse bias— in 16 European countries are analyzed. This study also analyzed the development of response rates. The analysis used metadata and paradata from the European Social Survey (ESS) and the European Labour Force Survey (LFS), the latter of which was used as a reference statistic for the nonresponse bias calculation. The analyzed time span was from 2002 to 2010.
