Abstract: ‘The Central and East European Population since 1850’ is the fifth volume in ‘The Societies of Europe’ series and the third volume on the European population, providing the most comprehensive statistical data available on Central and East European demography. It is a comparative and historical data handbook, presenting series data on demographic developments, population and household/family structures for 21 countries of Central and East Europe. A comparative introduction presents main territorial patterns of population structure and demographic change. Data are widely documented by including indicator definitions and an extensive bibliography. Population figures are given for each population census by sex, civil status and age. Furthermore, regional population density and distribution are included for each census. All major fields of demographic change are covered: fertility, infant and overall mortality, life expectancy, marriage and divorce. Major household and family changes are described. The book provides commentary on the main population structures and trends in Central and East Europe since the mid-nineteenth century.
