Development of a multi-faceted model of domain-specific problem-solving competence and its acceptance by different stakeholders in the business domain

Abstract:	While measuring competence in general education has a long tradition, efforts to measure domain-specific vocational and professional competences are rare. As a first step towards closing this research gap, we developed a multi-faceted model of domain-specific problemsolving competence that serves as a starting point for the development of assessment instruments. Based on a literature review, our action-oriented approach integrates cognitive and non-cognitive facets of problem solving. The model suggests 13 competence facets, which are assigned to 4 competence components, namely knowledge application, action regulation, self-concept, and interest. We investigated the acceptance of our model in a study with different stakeholders in vocational education and training (n = 100). As expected, knowledge application was rated highest. However, the overall weightings of the four components are quite balanced, and all proposed facets were rated as important for solving typical problems in office work. This result can be cautiously interpreted as an indication of ecological validity of the model. Although the model was developed in the business domain, it can be adapted to other domains. The lack of a social component that would take account of collaborative problem solving was identified as a shortcoming of the current model but can be integrated in future research.
Translation of the title:	Entwicklung eines Mehrfacettenmodells domänenspezifischer Problemlösekompetenz und dessen Akzeptanz durch Akteure im kaufmännischen Bereich (German)
Translation of the abstract:	Im beruflichen Bereich gibt es bislang nur wenige Ansätze zur Modellierung domänenspezifischer Kompetenzen. Als Ausgangspunkt für die Entwicklung von Messinstrumenten wurde daher ein Mehrfacettenmodell domänenspezifischer Problemlösekompetenz konzipiert. Einem handlungsorientierten Modellierungsansatz folgend wurden auf Basis von Literaturrecherchen kognitive und nicht-kognitive Facetten des Problemlösens integriert. Das Modell sieht 13 Kompetenzfacetten vor, die sich auf 4 Kompetenzkomponenten verteilen: Wissensanwendung, Handlungsregulation, Selbstkonzept und Interesse. Um die Akzeptanz des Modells zu untersuchen, wurde eine Fragebogenstudie mit verschiedenen Akteuren der kaufmännischen Berufsausbildung durchgeführt (n = 100). Wie erwartet, wurde Wissensanwendung als besonders wichtig eingeschätzt. Insgesamt sind die Gewichtungen der vier Komponenten jedoch relativ ausgeglichen und alle vorgeschlagenen Facetten wurden für wichtig erachtet, um typische Probleme in kaufmännischen Abteilungen zu lösen. Dieser Befund kann vorsichtig als ein Zeichen ökologischer Validität des Modells interpretiert werden. Wenngleich das Kompetenzmodell im kaufmännischen Bereich entwickelt wurde, kann es auf andere Domänen adaptiert werden. Eine derzeit noch nicht vorgesehene soziale Komponente, welche insbesondere kollaboratives Problemlösen berücksichtigt, kann für zukünftige Forschungen ergänzt werden. (German)
