Abstract: Incorporating psychological insights regarding human behavior to explain how individuals make economic decisions is providing new perspectives to research questions in development economics. Understanding the way that people make the decisions is key for the design of programs that aim at improving the livelihood of people in poverty throughout the developing world. In this dissertation I incorporate behavioral economic tools to examine how people in the Philippines make decisions in three areas: institutions, savings and insurance.
