Abstract: All relevant field actors agree on the importance of OA. The issue frames differ only in respect to particularities, e.g. whether green or gold OA is preferred. Surprisingly, no field actor engages in anti-OA framing. Nevertheless, OA does not fly and transform the field as expected. By drawing on qualitative data, we discovered an undercurrent of issue frames, which are not directly connected to OA: university system issues of evaluation, tenure criteria, accreditations and ratings. These different issues are debated in different spheres, OA is publicly debated in what we call front-stage whereas university system issues are debated in the professional community only, thus backstage.
