Abstract: Positions of political actors are a main interest in political science and politics alike. They allow answering questions of representation, party competition and coalition governance. However, many questions require positions of individual politicians rather than political parties, a difficult task in party-centered systems. The recent rise of social media as an individualized communication form allows new approaches of measurement. This dissertation presents a theoretical framework, measurement theory and empirical applications of using social media communication of individual politicians to estimate their ideological positions. It shows we can observe intra-party heterogeneity, electoral incentives and polarization in individual politicians as well as in political parties.
