Abstract: Domain-specific approaches in well-specified domains are one of the best starting points for model-driven development (MDD). Web application design and implementation is an area which seems to be a popular target for current MDD research, possibly due to the great maturity of Web design methodologies which can with some effort be adapted to include dynamic behavior. It is also reasonable to assume that MDD approaches profit from the use of frameworks, another field where Web engineering has a lot to offer. This paper starts with a brief discussion of Web applications and their unique properties as opposed to general software, leading to a list of specific problems which must be addressed. In turn, we will examine several concepts helpful for the realization of Web applications and analyze how each of them helps with solving the inherent problems, illustrating them with examples.
