Abstract:	This dissertation consists of two self-contained chapters, which are broadly related to questions in empirical public finance. The first chapter contains a methodological contribution that is particularly suited for the study of tax systems and social insurance programs. The second chapter is empirical in nature and concerned with social mobility in Germany.
