Abstract: The chapter provides an overview of seminal and current psycholinguistic accounts of translation and interpreting. We introduce key theoretical concepts and assumptions in such accounts, such as horizontal and vertical translation, as well as core psycholinguistic mechanisms and procedures from bilingual language processing which are assumed to play a role in the translation process, such as cross-linguistic priming, lexical co-activation, and predictive processing. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of existing empirical studies investigating the role of these processing mechanisms in translation.
