Abstract: This article analyzes the ephebarchic law from Amphipolis, published in 2015, from an agonistic point of view. The long decree has some peculiar regulations that need an explanation: The paidotribai have to undress when supervising the training of the youths, ephebes who want to take part in supralocal agones are not supported by the polis, three victors are announced pari passu in the yearly competitions, and there is an imbalance between the daily training of the ephebes and the disciplines of the competitions in the gymnasium. The respective parts of the decree are studied within the wider context of athletics in the Greek world. It is argued that the ephebeia in Hellenistic Macedonia should not be seen as a merely military institution, its main function was to form the polis’s (wealthy) youth into a homogenous group.
