Abstract: This contribution discusses theoretical considerations and recent perspectives on the global spread of English as an international language (EIL). We introduce relevant developments and terms of the Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and World Englishes (WE) paradigms and discuss the advantages of a joint approach. We suggest bridging the existing paradigm gap and discuss its relevance for notions such as English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), global Englishes (GE), and EIL. The chapter addresses WE and the second language classroom, focusing on targets and norms in relation to models of WE. Finally, we bring together theoretical considerations and discuss how WE and SLA can be implemented in the classroom to promote the teaching of EIL.
