Die vorliegende Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit zwei Autorinnen der Frühen Neuzeit: Katharina Schütz-Zell (1497/98 – 1562) und Caritas Pirckheimer (1467 – 1532). Katharina Schütz-Zell, die Frau des Straßburger Reformators Matthäus Zell, verbrachte ihr ganzes Leben in dieser Reichsstadt. Caritas Pirckheimer, die Schwester des Humanisten Willibald Pirckheimer, gehörte einem Nürnberger Patriziergeschlecht an. Nach ihrem Eintritt in das Klara-Kloster wurde sie 1503 zur Äbtissin dieser Institution gewählt. Obwohl beide Frauen unterschiedlichen sozialen Schichten angehörten, waren sie – jede auf ihre eigene Weise – hoch gebildet. Und sie haben eines gemeinsam: Beide Frauen wurden in die religiösen Konflikte und Veränderungen der ersten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts involviert. Katharina Schütz-Zell musste ihre Heirat mit einem protestantischen Prediger verteidigen, und Caritas Pirckheimer versuchte, die Auflösung ihres Konvents zu verhindern. Sowohl die Frau des Reformators als auch die Äbtissin haben ihre Meinungen zu den Ereignissen schriftlich festgehalten. Eine Auswahl der Werke der Autorinnen wird unter Berücksichtigung der historischen, sozialen und örtlichen Gegebenheiten verglichen.

The present doctoral thesis is about two female authors of Early Modern Germany: Katharina Schütz-Zell (1497/98 – 1562) and Caritas Pirckheimer (1467 – 1532). Katharina Schütz-Zell, the wife of the Strasbourg reformer Matthew Zell, spent her whole life in this imperial city. Caritas Pirckheimer, the sister of the humanist Willibald Pirckheimer, belonged to a Nuremberg patrician family. After entering the St.-Clare-Convent, she became the abbess of that institution in 1503. Although both women belonged to very different social classes they were – every woman in her own special way – highly educated. And they have one thing in common: Both women were involved in the religious conflicts and changes of the first half of the 16th century. Katharina Schütz-Zell had to defend her marriage with the protestant preacher and Caritas Pirckheimer had to protect her convent against dissolution. The reformer’s wife as well as the abbess wrote down their opinions about those happenings. A selection of the authors’ works is compared with regards to the historical, social and local circumstances.
