Abstract:
|

Film – in contrast to other, more traditional art forms such as literature or painting - is affected by economic factors in every step of its production. State run film institutes, state sponsorship and film laws no longer secure the cultural production of Latin American countries. The contradiction between art and commerce that characterized the New Latin American Cinema of the 1960s and 1970s has also gone. The extent of technical requirements, the budget and the target audience are issues that most filmmakers raise while developing their film idea and topic. Contemporary film aesthetic flirts with film economy, is compromised or promoted by it, but in either case influenced. The film market, dominated by global conglomerates, makes internationalization a growing necessity for Latin American cinema. This demands from today’s filmmakers new strategies in terms of production as well as distribution. This dissertation investigates these strategies and looks at common problems in production and distribution in order to target possible solutions.
