Abstract: Whereas abstract rule representation is a minor issue for young children, the communicative context is of vital importance. For this reason, approaches based on the principle of “using English to learn it” are preferable to more traditional approaches relying on the credo of “learning English to use it”. Based on these assumptions, this article first addresses overall objectives of early second language learning, different learning scenarios, and age related issues, before the necessary prerequisites for successful L2 learning, such as input, interaction, output and individual factors are highlighted. As a conclusion to the previous sections, the final part discusses teaching principles and means of providing input and interaction which have proven particularly useful for young learners.
