Abstract: Consumer research has amply documented the disparity between sustainability-related intentions and actions: More customers intend to buy sustainable products than actually do. In the B2B context, we also know that in response to pressures from their stakeholders, many firms detach policy and communication from actual practice. Assuming a similar gap between firms’ sustainability intentions and actions – they intend to be sustainable but do not act sustainably – we administered a survey to 423 procurement employees. This survey provides the first empirical evidence of a decoupling of firms’ sustainability intentions from their actions, creating a gap between intention and action in corporate sustainability. This research thus establishes the theoretical and practical basis for harnessing intention to action in corporate sustainability.
